Gynecology

More and more, women are choosing the warm, comfortable surroundings of an outpatient surgery center as a favorable alternative to hospital- based surgery. Many common gynecologic procedures are performed at Rush SurgiCenter, including:

  • Dilatation and Curettage (D & C) - A D & C is done through the vagina and cervix (the opening to the womb or uterus), so no incision is needed. During the surgery, a sample of tissue from the lining of the uterus is removed. The tissue is sent to the lab for examination.
  • Hysteroscopy - A hysteroscopy is an inspection of the inside of the uterus, using a special instrument (hysteroscope). Sometimes, a D & C and hysteroscopy are done at the same time.
  • Laparoscopy - A laparoscopy is done by making a small incision into the abdomen with a special instrument (laparoscope). The surgeon uses the laparoscope to see the organs inside your body. Air is introduced into the abdomen (belly) to help make the organs easier to see. Sometimes, operations on some of the organs-such as the uterus, ovaries, and tubes-can be done at the same time. In this case, more than one incision is used.
